United States: The health experts indicated that low temperatures that are present today can raise the chances of suffering a potentially paralyzing stroke.

Cold weathers are, for instance, well known to be dangerous for such patients as the elderly and patients with some diseases such as respiratory diseases.

However, the study also reveals that strokes are more frequent during winter because low temperatures raise blood pressure and clotting factors – which cause the potentially lethal condition.

The latest forecast for the UK is that it will be colder in the run-up to Christmas, with some parts of Scotland possibly getting as low as -3C.

This cold Arctic front that is heading towards the UK brings with it frosts, ice, and snow showers though heavy storms are expected in southern England and Wales during the holiday.

It also follows worrying new NHS figures that revealed that category two calls, such as strokes, took 42 minutes on average for an ambulance.

An independent MailOnline analysis of NHS data conducted earlier this month revealed that stroke in men below 39 years has risen by 23% over the last twenty years.

What more are the experts stating?

Together with increased winter risks, the delays mean that survivors will face even more permanent disabilities and higher pressure on the NHS.

Furthermore, as the experts note, without any immediate treatment, a stroke could lead to even death or chronic disabilities like paralysis or memory loss.

According to Carolina Fransen, the co-founder of Alvica mentioned that “The sad reality here is that ambulance delays for strokes can cost lives or people’s futures,” Daily Mail reported.

“Every minute lost during a stroke is a step closer to irreversible brain damage, yet response times continue to lag as stroke admissions rise.

‘It’s a double hit — more people are suffering strokes, and fewer are receiving the timely care they need to maximize their recovery,” she added.

‘Not only that, but with winter fast approaching the NHS is going to come under even more pressure and research has shown that freezing temperatures can increase the risk of strokes,” Fransen continued.

Even more worrying is the fact that research conducted also indicates that heart attacks or strokes are up to twice as likely to occur during periods of cold weather extending for about four days and above.

This is because due to cold stroke, blood vessels in the skin, fingers, and toes constrict to minimize heat loss in the body.

This process is termed vasoconstriction, and it leads to an increase in the blood pressure and the rate at which the heart pumps blood.

On the other hand, blood becomes thicker and stickier in response when temperatures are low, which is the same thing here.
