United States: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said in a statement that it is withdrawing its ban on the sales of Juul e-cigarettes as new court decisions are considered and updated data from the company is reviewed.

More about the news

The FDA banned the firm from selling its products in February 2022. However, its products are still in supermarkets because of their appeal. During this period, Juul still maintained the position of the second-largest producer of the e-cigarette in the United States.

Now, the FDA declared that Juuls products are again under consideration of the agency of the United States- however, the FDA has noted that is not imply that the products will be approved conclusively.

Some of the communication restrictions it highlighted were that federal statutes prohibited further dissemination of information, CNBC reported.

Juul was among the initiatives that emerged as one of the most successful due to the first wave of vaping more than a decade ago.

That success was accompanied by worry that e-cigarettes were a ‘gateway’ inhaler for people to nicotine dependency. Dipping to a low of 19 percent in 2016, vaping grew to nearly 28 percent among all high school students in 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported.

Though adults today have since seen Juul contract into a period of revenue downturn, e-cigarettes and other alternative nicotine products have continued to remain popular and widely available to this day.

For example, one of the institutions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, clarified that the usage of these devices increased by nearly 50 percent from January 2020 to December 2022. At that time, the agency said, Juul ranked second among e-cig brands, coming only behind Vuse.

Although e-cigarette growth is still on the rise, late recently, smokeless tobacco products have also outpaced conventional cigarettes, CNBC reported.

What more have the experts stated?

Philip Morris which now owns the nicotine pouch-maker Zyn said in their latest report that the smokeless product has risen by 21 percent from this time last year and this sector now is contributing to almost 40 percent of the total gross revenue of the firm, as revealed by Barron’s.

In a statement, Juul added its appreciation for the FDA’s latest decision, and looked forward to “re-engaging with the agency on a science- and evidence-based process to pursue a marketing authorization” for its products as CNBC reported.

The company added, “We remain confident in the quality and substance of our applications and believe that a full review of the science and evidence will demonstrate that our products meet the statutory standard of being appropriate for the protection of public health.”
